Welcome to all Women,
Partners and Families to the
Lady's Hands Doula
Service Website
I thought at this time you may want to know a little bit about me personally. If after reading this
page you have any questions about my personal beliefs about birth or anything else that I
address on this page or any other page on this website please feel free to contact me.

I have not chosen to become a Doula, I was chosen to become a Doula. This is not a job for
me it is a calling that I can’t explain. I feel that I was put here to help birthing mothers overcome
their fear and anxiety about the birthing process and to help them to trust in themselves and
their bodies.

I am the mother of 3 adult children, a son born 01/05/1980, a son born 5/28/1981 and a
daughter born 8/06/1982, and I breast fed all three of them because that is what was best for
me.

The following is a short version of my own birth stories. I am including this information here to
show that I have experienced 3 completely different births, and I understand how you as a
birthing woman feels because I have been there. Please know that these are short versions of
my birth stories and if you would like more information about them feel free to contact me.

With my first birth I had spontaneous release of my water but no contractions. 20 hours later
still no contractions. Induction was done with Pitocin. 8 1/2hrs. Later I gave birth.
It was during this birth that I felt that there had to be a better way to have a baby. There just  had
to be a way not to feel so alone during birth, even with my husband  present I felt that I was all
alone. I didn’t know if what was happening to me was normal, I didn’t  know how to help myself
through the contractions and my husband didn’t know what to do to help me either. He did ask
the nurse what he should do but that was at the time when fathers were first ALLOWED into the
birthing rooms and the answer that he got was, "There is not much of anything that you can do
to help so if your are uncomfortable why don’t you go into the Father’s room and someone will
come and get you when things move on". This may not be an exact quote but it is close.

Second baby again spontaneous release of water this time contractions started right away. I
gave birth 2 1/4 hours later. With no use of pain medications during labor or birth.

With my third birth. I had my water released by my doctor with contractions starting within 2
hours. 6 hours later I gave birth.

Though during the first two births my husband was there at all times,  I still wish I had the help
of another woman who knew what I was feeling and going through at that time. Even if it was
just to hold my hand and sit by my side. During my third birth I was alone, and I believe that
having the help from another woman would have been wonderful.

In addition to having 3 births myself, I have taken the initial DONA (Doulas of North America)
training and DONA Advanced program "A"  training. I also certified as a birth Doula through
CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum professional Association) I have attended approximately 35
births over the last 15 years. I have attended childbirth classes as a non pregnant woman. I
continue my Doula education with each birth because each birth is different and I see it as a
learning opportunity.

I also breast fed all three of my children. I do feel that breastfeeding is best for all babies, but I
realize that some women for whatever personal reason they have cannot or will not breast-feed
their babies.  As I said before it is not my decision to make. It is my job to support the birthing
mother in her decisions to the best of my abilities and if I couldn't do that it is my job to find
someone who can help.

I also offer belly casting and massage though I am NOT a CMT. I have been trained in
massage while working as a nursing assistant. I am also a certified first responder and
Captain of the Kohler Company Engine Division First Responder Squad.

To me other than being a mother and grandmother there is no other job as rewarding as
working as a Doula. I find being a Doula exhilarating and fascinating. It is hard work but the
rewards out weigh the work every time!

A Doula is certainly an extra pair of hands and caring heart helping you achieve your childbirth
goals and helping each birth be a labor of love.
